Community Access & Social Participation

Get out, get involved, and build the life you want — with the right support beside you.

What is Community Access?

Community access is about getting out of the house and participating in the life happening around you. It is NDIS-funded support that helps you engage in social, recreational, and educational activities in your local community — whether that is catching up with friends at a cafe, joining a sports group, attending a class, or exploring a new hobby.

For many people with disability, getting out into the community can be challenging without the right support. Barriers like transport, physical accessibility, social anxiety, or simply not knowing where to start can make community participation feel out of reach. That is where we come in.

At Delta Community Support, our community access services are designed to break down those barriers. We provide one-on-one or group support to help you access the places, activities, and experiences that matter to you. We operate across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Melbourne, and our support workers know their local communities well.

Community access is not just about going places — it is about building the skills, confidence, and connections that lead to a richer, more fulfilling life. Every outing is an opportunity to learn something new, meet someone, or simply enjoy your day.

Who is Community Access For?

Community access is for any NDIS participant who wants to be more involved in community life. It suits a wide range of people and circumstances.

You might benefit from community access if you:

  • Want to build social connections but find it hard to meet people or maintain friendships
  • Are interested in recreational activities like sport, art, music, or cooking but need support to participate
  • Want to develop practical skills like using public transport, managing money, or navigating new environments
  • Are looking for meaningful ways to spend your time during the day, including volunteering or education
  • Feel isolated at home and want support to get out more regularly
  • Are working towards employment goals and need help building the skills and confidence to get there

Whether you are 18 or 65, whether your disability is physical, intellectual, or psychosocial, community access can be shaped to fit your interests and aspirations. There is no one right way to participate in community life — and we will help you find yours.

What's Included in Our Community Access Services

Our community access services are as varied as the people we support. Here is a sample of the activities and supports we offer:

Social Outings

Catching up with friends, visiting family, going to cafes, restaurants, parks, or community events — whatever brings you joy.

Recreational Activities

Sport, swimming, gym sessions, bowling, movies, fishing, bushwalking — activities that keep you active and engaged.

Group Programs

Small group activities where you can meet other participants, build friendships, and try new things in a supportive setting.

Volunteering

Support to find and participate in volunteer roles that match your interests and give you a sense of purpose and contribution.

Skill Development

Practical skills like cooking classes, budgeting workshops, using public transport, or learning to navigate new places independently.

Community Facilities

Accessing your local library, gym, pool, community centre, or any other facility you want to use — with as much or as little support as you need.

Educational Activities

Attending courses, workshops, or classes at TAFE, community colleges, or other educational providers.

Shopping & Errands

Help with grocery shopping, visiting the bank, picking up prescriptions, or other community-based errands.

How NDIS Funding Works for Community Access

Community access is primarily funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Social and Community Participation in your NDIS plan. This budget covers the cost of a support worker to accompany and assist you during community-based activities.

Some community access activities may also be funded under Capacity Building — Increased Social and Community Participation, particularly when the focus is on developing skills that will increase your independence over time. For example, learning to use public transport or building social skills might fall under capacity building.

Community access is typically funded at hourly rates, which vary depending on the day and time of support. Weekend and evening support may attract higher rates in line with NDIS pricing arrangements.

At Delta Community Support, we will work with you and your support coordinator to make the most of your funding. We can help you plan your community access activities to stretch your budget while still doing the things that matter most to you.

Our Approach to Community Access

Community access at Delta Community Support is not about filling time — it is about building a life that feels meaningful and connected. Here is how we do it:

Interest-Based Programs

We start with what you enjoy. Your community access plan is built around your interests, hobbies, and goals — not a pre-set program. If you love fishing, we will help you get to the water. If you want to try art, we will find a class.

Building Genuine Connections

We focus on helping you build real relationships and social connections — not just being in the same room as other people. Our workers facilitate introductions, help navigate social situations, and support you to maintain friendships.

Skill Development Focus

Every community outing is an opportunity to build skills. Whether it is using an EFTPOS machine, ordering at a counter, reading a bus timetable, or handling money, we weave skill development into everyday activities.

Fading Support

As your confidence and skills grow, we step back. The aim is for you to need less support over time — to go to the gym on your own, catch the bus independently, or join a group without a worker by your side.

Local Knowledge

Our support workers know their communities well. They can connect you with local groups, events, and facilities that match your interests — places you might not have found on your own.
