Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Live your life, your way — with the right support around you, every day.
What is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living, commonly known as SIL, is an NDIS-funded support designed for people with disability who need help with everyday tasks in their home. It is about giving you the assistance you need so you can live as independently as possible while still having support workers there when you need them.
SIL can look different for every person. Some participants live in shared homes with two to five other people, while others have individual arrangements in their own home. The level of support varies too — some people need someone available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while others only need support at certain times, such as mornings and evenings.
At Delta Community Support, we work across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and Melbourne to provide SIL services that are genuinely built around each participant. We do not take a one-size-fits-all approach. Every person in our SIL homes has a support plan that reflects their goals, their preferences, and their daily routine.
The goal of SIL is not just to provide help — it is to build your confidence and skills over time. Whether that means learning to cook your own meals, managing your medication independently, or simply having the freedom to choose how your day looks, SIL is about moving towards greater independence at your own pace.
Who is SIL For?
SIL is for NDIS participants who need regular, ongoing support to manage daily life in a home setting. It is suited to people with a range of disabilities, including physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, psychosocial disabilities, and complex support needs.
You might benefit from SIL if you:
- ✓ Need help with personal care tasks like showering, dressing, or grooming each day
- ✓ Want to live outside the family home but need daily assistance to do so safely
- ✓ Require overnight support or someone on call through the night
- ✓ Are looking for a shared living arrangement where you can build friendships and social skills
- ✓ Have complex health or behavioural support needs that require trained, consistent staff
SIL is available to participants of all ages, though it is most commonly accessed by adults. If you are a family member exploring options for a loved one, we are happy to walk you through how SIL works and whether it could be the right fit.

How NDIS Funding Works for SIL
SIL is funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life in your NDIS plan. It is one of the higher-funded support categories because it covers the cost of having support workers available in your home on a regular or continuous basis.
The way SIL funding works is different from most other NDIS supports. Rather than a simple hourly rate, SIL is funded through a detailed quote that outlines the level of support each participant needs. This quote takes into account:
- • The number of hours of support you need each day
- • Whether you need active overnight support or sleepover arrangements
- • The ratio of staff to participants in the home
- • Any complex or high-intensity support requirements
The NDIA reviews SIL quotes carefully before approving funding. At Delta Community Support, we work closely with your support coordinator and the NDIA to develop a thorough, transparent SIL proposal. We ensure the quote accurately reflects your support needs without over-servicing or under-servicing.
If you do not currently have SIL in your NDIS plan but believe you need it, we can help you and your support coordinator build the case for a plan review. We have experience supporting participants through this process and understand what the NDIA looks for.
Our Approach to SIL
Delta Community Support delivers SIL services with a clear philosophy: your home, your rules, your goals. Here is what sets us apart:
Person-Centred Plans
Every participant has a detailed, individualised support plan developed in partnership with you, your family, and your support coordinator. Your plan is a living document — it changes as your goals evolve.
Consistent Staff
We prioritise giving you the same support workers wherever possible. Consistent staff means better relationships, better understanding of your needs, and less disruption to your routine.
Participant Choice & Control
You decide how your day looks. From when you wake up to what you eat for dinner, our role is to support your choices — not make them for you.
Active Support Model
Our staff are trained in active support, which means encouraging and assisting you to do things yourself rather than doing everything for you. This builds confidence and independence over time.
Regular Reviews
We hold regular reviews with you, your family, and your support coordinator to make sure your SIL services are meeting your needs and progressing towards your goals.
Family Involvement
We welcome family involvement at every stage. Families are key partners in ensuring participants feel safe, supported, and connected.
